Business Visitor Visas

Engaging in certain types of business activity in Canada may not require a foreign person to obtain a work permit, and in such case a foreign person may be admitted into Canada as a business visitor.

Transition from Business Work Permit to Permanent Residence in Canada

Foreign business persons may be eligible to obtain a work permit to do business in Canada. Obtaining such work permit for business activity in Canada may create an opportunity to later apply for permanent residence in Canada.

Federal Business Immigration Programs

Canada needs experienced business people with sufficient capital to make their contribution to the Canadian economy. Federal Government currently has two business immigration programs: Start-Up Visa, and Self-employed Persons.

Start-Up Visa (Federal Immigration Program)

The Start-Up Visa Program allows immigrant entrepreneurs from around the world to start innovative businesses in Canada that will create jobs in Canada and will one day be able to compete internationally. The Start-Up Visa Program allows immigrant entrepreneurs to get private investors in Canada to invest in their Start-up businesses in Canada. However, some prospective immigrants may decide to rely on their own financial resources for their Start-up business in Canada.

Start-up Program Requirements:

  • Have a qualifying business

  • Obtain a letter of support from a designated Canadian organisation

  • Provide proof of ability to communicate in English or French

  • Provide proof of having sufficient financial resources to settle in Canada

All immigrants should also meet medical, security and criminal checks requirements.

Provincial Nominee Programs

Provincial Nominee Programs for Business Immigration

Canadian Provinces and Territories have various business immigration programs as part of their Provincial Nominee Programs (PNP). N.B.: Among the most important requirements of PNP programs is for the business immigrants to settle and set up a business in the Province or Territory they choose to immigrate to.

Provincial Nominee Programs based on Permanent Job Offer

Canadian Provinces and Territories have various Provincial Nominee Programs (PNP) for qualifying prospective immigrants, who have a suitable job offer from a qualifying Canadian employer. Both Canadian employer and prospective immigrant have to be involved in the PNP application process at different stages. Some Canadian employers find PNP programs to be very attractive avenues for recruiting and retaining foreign skilled workers. One of the advantages of PNP programs is that they allow foreign skilled workers to apply for Canadian work permits on the basis of PNP nomination even before completion of permanent residence application process with the Federal Government of Canada.
